Balintore / Tarbat Ness Lighthouse
Important tip for this trip - pack a picnic
Balintore can be found along the A9 travelling north and is about a 45 minute drive from Dingwall. It is a small village with lovely views of the sea. Here you can find the "Mermaid of the North" - a lovely 8 foot bronze sculpture created by Stephen Hayward. There are also four companion pieces in the town making up the Seaboard Sculpture Trail. In this area you will also find part of the Pictish Trail.
From Balintore follow the B9165 north through the fishing village of Portmahomack to reach the Tarbat Ness Lighthouse. There are some good walking routes around the lighthouse and coast. If you follow the dolphin signs there is a lovely grassy verge overlooking the sea that on a clear day makes a perfect picnic spot.
